The #1 question we get asked is “What’s the difference between a single hung and a double hung?”
A “SINGLE HUNG’ is a window on which only the bottom panel or sash slides up and down and tilts-to-clean.
A “DOUBLE HUNG” also opens up and down - but both the top and bottom panels (or “sashes”) operate and tilt-to-clean.
Double hungs are nice on two stories because of the ease of cleaning the outside of the top glass panel from inside the home. Single hungs are particularly strong and airtight, because they have a center bar connecting the frame near the middle, unlike a double hung.
Some windows are only available as a single hung, such as the NT Executive. Some are only double hung, such as the Simonton 5500 and 9800. Others, such as the NT Presidential and the Don Young windows are available as either single hung or double
hung, depending on your needs. Typically, double hungs cost a little more than single hungs.
Fixed or “PICTURE WINDOWS” are stationary and do not open or operate at all. They also do not tilt-in for easy cleaning from inside the home
“CASEMENT WINDOWS” crank open to the outside using a crank handle. They have a screen on the inside so that it does not interfere with the window opening up
